New test : RT-PCR test for SARS-COV2 in the stool samples

It's an RT-PCR test for SARS-COV2 in the stool samples. The test needs a specific kit as the stool must be placed in a stabilizing buffer at the moment of sampling.

It has been shown that the human GI tract serve as an important reservoir for SARS-CoV-2 and that the virus can be detected in fecal samples for several months after infection (Xu et al. 2020, Wu et al. 2020, Natarajan et al. 2022). SARS-CoV-2 can infiltrate gastrointestinal (GI) cells and may cause GI infection (Xiao et al. 2020).  The extended presence of viral RNA in feces, but not in respiratory samples, along with the association of fecal viral RNA shedding with GI symptoms suggest that SARS-CoV-2 infects the GI tract and that this infection can be prolonged in a subset of individuals with COVID-19 (Natarajan et al, 2022). Natarajan et al. have found that extended shedding of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in participants who no longer have detectable viral RNA in OP swabs is closely associated with a host of systemic and GI symptoms, providing further evidence of a SARS-CoV-2 infection of the gut.  Thus, there was a need for establishing  fecal SARS-CoV-2 testing.
